Etihad and Ethiopian Launch Strategic Codeshare to Expand Africa–Asia Connectivity

ABU DHABI/ADDIS ABABA—Etihad Airways and Ethiopian Airlines have officially launched their strategic codeshare partnership, reinforcing travel links across Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

Under the agreement, Ethiopian Airlines will begin flights from Addis Ababa to Abu Dhabi on July 15, 2025, with Etihad launching daily flights on the return leg from October 8. Guests can book seamless itineraries with single ticketing, one check-in, and through-checked baggage.

This collaboration marks the first phase of a broader joint venture announced in March 2025. Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, stated that the partnership enhances travel flexibility, supports trade and tourism, and delivers unmatched travel experiences.

The codeshare grants Etihad passengers access to Ethiopian’s extensive network of 55 African destinations across 33 countries, including Kigali, Kinshasa, Entebbe, Lusaka, Harare, and Victoria Falls. Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines customers will gain connections via Abu Dhabi to 20 major destinations throughout Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, like Sydney, Colombo, Krabi, and Phnom Penh.

Industry analysts say the deal significantly boosts connectivity between Africa and high-growth regions while enhancing passenger convenience. Etihad, focused on expanding in 2025, aims to grow the UAE’s tourism hub role; this partnership aligns with that strategy.

As both airlines ready for code-shared service in mid-summer and early fall, the partnership is expected to streamline bookings and expand route options, boosting travel between continents. The next phase of their joint venture may include deeper network integration and product harmonization.
