Burkina Faso Launches SAFA to Overhaul Airport Management

State Launches SAFA, Prepares for New Airport in 2026

Burkina Faso has moved to transform its aviation framework by establishing the Société des Aéroports du Faso (SAFA). Professor Wolfgang H. Thome of ATC News reported on this development as part of his Africa Weekly Aviation Trails series.

SAFA consolidates preexisting entities, the Ministry of Aviation Development (MOAD), Régie Autonome de Gestion des Aéroports (RACGAE), and Direction de l’Aviation civile (DAAN), into a single organization responsible for airport management and development. The move anticipates the opening of the new Ouagadougou–Donsin International Airport around 2025-2026, designed to replace the aging Thomas Sankara Airport.

SAFA Formation and Strategic Mandate

SAFA’s mandate includes unifying airport operations under one entity, streamlining administration, and improving oversight. This strategic change reflects a broader push for modernization across Burkina Faso’s aviation landscape.

Donsin Airport Development

The Donsin Airport, located approximately 35 km north of Ouagadougou, is set to feature a 3,500 m runway, expandable to 4,000 m, and a 17,000 m² terminal capable of serving over 1 million passengers annually in its first phase. Initial completion is expected by late 2025 to early 2026. Delays have occurred due to political instability and a tragic construction accident, but the project continues.

Enhancing Security with Customs Scanners

In tandem with organizational reform, Burkina Faso plans to invest US $1.85 million in 17 portable customs scanners at airport terminals, aimed at strengthening border control and cargo screening ahead of the new airport’s operation. This move signals a commitment to enhanced aviation security, though official confirmation remains pending.

Why the Reform Matters

  • Governance Efficiency: SAFA’s unified structure promises faster decision-making and consistent airport standards.
  • Capacity Building: The Donsin airport offers regional connectivity potential and future cargo traffic growth.
  • Security Enhancement: Modern equipment and protocols boost compliance with ICAO standards and international airport operations.
  • Symbol of Stability: Despite recent political upheaval, Burkina Faso’s continued investment in infrastructure demonstrates resilience.

What’s Next

  • SAFA Implementation: Watch how quickly the new authority integrates former entities and sets operational protocols.
  • Scanner Rollout: Confirmation of investment and deployment timeline will be key for security analysis.
  • Airport Progress: Monitoring Donsin’s construction milestones, landside, runway, and terminal development will shed light on project viability.

Regional Impact: With modern airport infrastructure, Burkina Faso may attract increased cargo, tourism, and business traffic.
