C909 Firefighting Aircraft: COMAC Secures First Order at Singapore Airshow 2026

Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) has taken a major step into the special-mission aircraft space by securing its first commercial order for the C909 firefighting aircraft at the 2026 Singapore Airshow.

The deal, signed on the sidelines of Asia’s premier aerospace event, was confirmed through a Letter of Intent (LOI) with China’s Shanxi Victory General Aircraft covering three firm orders and three options for the firefighting variant of the C909.

This new variant significantly expands the C909’s mission profile, adding aerial firefighting and emergency response roles to the aircraft’s existing regional passenger and medical service configurations.

What Makes the C909 Firefighting Aircraft Special?

  • Water and Retardant Capacity: Up to 10 metric tons (22,000 lb.) of water or fire-retardant payload.
  • Personnel Transport: Seating for up to 19 personnel, enabling combined suppression and support missions.
  • Versatile Base Platform: Based on the standard regional C909 jet, already certified for passenger service.
  • Operational Flexibility: Designed to operate from shorter runways and in challenging environments, enhancing firefighting reach and response times.

The variant’s airworthiness certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in December 2025 laid the regulatory groundwork for commercial contracts such as this.

COMAC’s Strategy: Diversifying the C909 Family

COMAC has been progressively expanding the C909 family beyond pure passenger service. At the Singapore Airshow, the manufacturer also showcased a C909 Medical Service Jet (MSJ), equipped for intensive care and specialized surgical procedures.

  • Medical Missions: The MSJ configuration can include an intensive care section and seating for up to 24 passengers, with Shanghai health approval for specific medical procedures.
  • Display at Airshow: Two C909 variants, firefighting and medical, were displayed alongside COMAC’s larger C919 narrow-body airliners.

By broadening the C909’s roles, from regional passenger transport to firefighting and medical deployment,  COMAC aims to capture new market segments in special-mission aviation.

Background: The C909 in Regional Aviation

Originally derived from China’s ARJ21 regional jet design, the C909 now seats 78-97 passengers and is optimized for operations in diverse conditions, including high-temperature and high-altitude environments.

The platform has seen growing adoption in Southeast Asia, with operators in Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam, and has crossed 200+ deliveries globally as part of China’s broader push into regional aviation.

Industry Implications

Special-Mission Aircraft Market

The C909 firefighting variant positions COMAC in competition with established aerial firefighting platforms, although with a unique jet-powered, land-based approach rather than traditional water-scooping seaplanes like the Canadair CL-415.

Analysts see potential for deployment not only within China but in regions prone to large wildfires that require rapid response and long-distance transit capability.

Certification and Export Prospects

While CAAC certification enables domestic and some international use, broader regulatory approval (e.g., EASA or FAA) would help the firefighting C909 penetrate global markets beyond China and Asia.

What’s Next for the C909 Firefighting Variant

  • Final Deliveries: Moving from LOI to firm contracts and production timelines for the firefighting fleet.
  • Operational Testing: Real-world deployment in aerial firefighting operations by Shanxi Victory General Aviation.
  • Regulatory Outreach: Pursuit of wider international certifications to expand export opportunities.
